Soapstone figure

1   Saw a piece of soapstone to a suitable size depending on what you want to make. A cross, a whale tooth, or a unicorn horn. Remember that some of the stone will disappear during rasping and sanding, so cut the piece slightly larger than your final design.

2   Draw the design with a marker, then saw or file the design roughly into the stone.

3   Rasp, file, and sand the design.

4   Use a sanding sponge.

5   Polish the stone with wet sandpaper.

6   Drill a hole for the leather cord.

7   Polish the stone.

8   Heat the figure with a heat gun and polish with beeswax, using a piece of kitchen roll – it gives a nice shiny finish.

9   Cut the leather cord to 150 cm. Pull it through and attach the silver piece.

10   Tie a knot.
