How to do it

1. The front consists of four (4) pieces of felt with holes which are then embroidered individually and identically with cross-stitches. You may need the template which is available as a separate PDF file for this idea. Use Maxi cotton yarn and a cross stitch needle and make 4 1/2 cross-stitches in one corner.

2. Underneath the first row of 4 1/2 cross-stitches, make a row of 3 1/2 cross-stitches etc. Change colour and repeat in a mirror inage thereby creating a diagonal pattern in each square; and embroidering a total of nine (9) squares with cross-stitches.

3. Put the four (4) cross-stitch pieces of felt together, so that there is a white cross-stitch square in the middle. Sew the four (4) pieces together in the outside holes, one side at a time, using tall cross-stitches. Make a large cross-stitch twice in the middle.

4. Back: Place the finished front on top of a piece of 3mm felt and cut a piece of felt to the same size.

5. Sew the front and the back together with buttonhole stitches. Use a pointed needle as there are no holes in the cut-out back piece of felt.
