Origami Christmas decorations

Make beautiful Christmas decorations out of white vellum paper using the paper folding art of origami. Fold doves or stars without using any glue and finish each design with a red hanging ribbon and pearlescent white bead.

How to do it

Star   Cut 7 pieces of paper measuring 8.5 x 8.5 cm.

2   Fold all 7 pieces of paper once. The paper should be folded diagonally.

3   Open up the paper.

4   Fold diagonally towards the other side. Use the bone folder to make sure the folds are crisp and tight.

5   Unfold the paper and then fold it diagonally towards the middle.

6   Fold in from both sides, using the bone folder to make sure the folds are crisp and tight.

7   Unfold the paper.

8   Fold diagonally towards the middle from the opposite corner.

9   Fold diagonally towards the middle from both sides.

10   Fold diagonally again from the bottom left corner towards the middle.

11   Fold diagonally towards the middle from both sides.

12   Fold along the fold lines to form a V shape across the sheet of paper. Fold the lower part towards you and then fold the top part backwards.

13   The folding lines made earlier make it easy to fold the paper at this angle.

14   The fold must be very crisp. Fold a total of 7 sheets into a star.

15   Now assemble the star without using glue. Insert the short point into the fold on the long point on one of the other folded sheets.

16   Repeat until only one is left.

17   Insert the last sheet by opening the folded edges on the long tip where the short tip is to be inserted.

18   Fold the two sides around the short tip again.

19   Thread 20 cm of red ribbon for hanging into a needle, add a bead and insert the needle through the fold approx. 2 cm from the end of one of the tips.

20   Pull the needle with the ribbon back through the bead, which may take a bit of effort.

21   Pull the ribbon so that the bead is just above the tip of the star. Tie the ends together in a knot.

Dove   Fold the dove out of a sheet of paper measuring 17 x 17 cm.

23   Fold the sheet diagonally from corner to corner.

24   Find the centre of the diagonal fold and fold half of it towards the corner opposite the middle.

25   Also fold from the other side down to the corner.

26   Fold the square into a triangle.

27   Turn the triangle over with the long side down, making sure the fold is crisp and straight.

28   Fold the top triangle down towards the middle on the long side.

29   Turn over and repeat on the other side. Fold down towards the middle.

30   Turn so that the long side is turned up. Make the wing by folding the top layer upwards. The lines that make up the small triangle lie flat against the body.

31   Make a fold on the top layer of the paper along the small triangle against the body.

32   Flip the dove over.

33   Fold the top tip upwards in the same way and then fold the triangle against the body.

34   Fold down the top layer of the wing to make a fold along one side of the triangle.

35   Fold the beak diagonally downwards from the wing to make the head and beak.

36   Open the fold and fold it inwards towards the body of the dove using the same fold lines.

37   Sharpen the fold.

38   Fold the tail downwards from the wing along one side of the triangle on the body.

39   Open the tail fold. Fold the tail into the body using the same fold lines, only the other way.

40   Sharpen the tail fold.

41   Cut 20 cm of ribbon for hanging and thread it through a needle. Insert the needle through the bird from the bottom up through the back.

42   Thread the needle and ribbon through a bead and then back again. Hold the ends of the ribbon.

43   Insert the needle back through the dove's back.

44   Tie a knot large enough that the ribbon will not slip back through the hole on the dove’s back.
