Macramé Beverage Coasters and Napkin Rings

Knot macramé napkin rings and coasters for your party table. Homemade table decorations elevate your table setting in style and you can make them well ahead of time. The beverage coasters are made using the same knot all the way around, while the napkin rings are knotted around a wooden ring. You need 51 m of cord to make four coasters and four napkin rings.

1 Cut macramé nylon cord: 5 x 80 cm and 1 x 140 cm. Make a ring in the middle of the 140 cm cord and double one of the 80 cm cords. Tie the cord to the ring with a lark’s head knot.

3 Double the five 80 cm cords and tie them to the ring with a lark's head knot.
4 Tighten the ring to make the middle of the beverage coaster.
5 Make a diagonal double half hitch knot around the same cord around the middle.
6 Make a diagonal double half hitch knot. Make two rounds/knots with this cord.
7 Make a diagonal double half hitch knot with the next cord in the middle. Repeat.
8 Cut extra cord to knot onto the coaster: 3 x 60 cm, 4 x 40 cm, 2 x 30 cm x 2.25 cm. Tie off each cord when there is 1.5 cm to the next cord to be knotted. Double a 60 cm cord and attach it with a lark’s head knot.
9 Continue to a diameter of 11 cm. Cut the ends so that the finished diameter is 15 cm. Moisten the ends and comb through. Tip: If necessary, iron the ends under a damp tea cloth.
10 Cut cords: 5 x 50 cm. Tie to the wooden ring with a lark’s head knot.
11 Attach all five cords to the wooden ring with a lark’s head knot.
12 Take the 4th cord and make a diagonal double half hitch knot with the next cord around it.
13 Make another diagonal double half hitch knot with cord 7 around cord 6.
14 Continue to hold cord 6 diagonally to the left and pull cord 5 diagonally to the right until a triangle is formed.
15 Tie a diagonal double half hitch knot around cord 6 with cord 5.
16 After making the diagonal double half hitch knot, the first V-knot is finished.
17 Hold cord 2 at an angle to the right. Tie a diagonal double half hitch knot with cord 3 around it.
18 Repeat with all three cords down to the bottom point. Hold cord 9 taut to the right and tie a diagonal double half hitch knot around it with the three cords down to the bottom point.
19 Gather together the two rows at the bottom point with a diagonal double half hitch knot.
20 Wrap cord 9 around cord 2 as shown in the picture.
21 Cut the ends to 7 cm.
22 Untangle the cords. Tip: Iron the ends under a damp tea cloth to make them lie flat.
23 Cut the ends into shape. The finished length of the fringes is 5 cm.
