Coiled Basket Weaving with Organic Cotton Fabric
#v13342
This round basket is made from organic cotton fabric which is cut into long strips and then wrapped around a piece of rope. The rope is coiled into a basket shape, built from the bottom and up, and then sewn together with simple stitches.
How to do it Download the templates/recipes
1. A 6cm high basket with a diameter of 11cm: Cut 2cm wide strips of organic fabric (different colours and patterns) lengthwise. Cut a piece of polypropylene rope measuring 3.5m and melt both ends with a lighter to prevent frayed ends.
2. Wrap the cotton fabric strips around the rope from one end to the other. Use a needle to secure the fabric ends or glue the fabric ends in place when changing colour or pattern.
3. Use a piece of Paper Yarn to tie one end of the rope to form a small circle with a hole in the middle. Tie with a simple knot.
4. Continue to form a tight coil using the Paper Yarn to hold the shape by making by “sewing” with loop-like “stitches. Make loops all the way around the first round. Pull the Paper Yarn towards yourself and through the hole from the front to the back.
5. Fasten the loop after the first round. Fasten by passing the needle from the right towards the left onto the back.
