A Faux Leather Paper hanging Decoration with Embroidery

These figures are punched out from faux leather paper. Holes are made for embroidery using the template and the design is embroidered with silver thread. A 1mm leather cord is used for sewing the figure together.

How to do it

Cut out the template and place it on top of the faux leather figure so that it fits precisely. You may tape the two together to prevent the template from moving.

Make small holes in the star following the template, using a cross stitch needle and a hammer (or with the point of an awl).

Embroider the pattern onto the star with silver thread and a cross stitch needle.

Make holes in the star for French knots. Make the French knots as follows: Push the needle and thread onto the front from the back and wrap the thread around the needle three times.

Pull the thread so that it sits tightly around the needle and make sure that the knot is completely covering the hole before pushing the needle through to the back

Cut a 115cm long 1mm leather cord for the star; an 85cm long cord for the heart and a 100cm long cord for the Christmas tree. Apply glue to the first 4cm. Leave to dry and cut the end of the cord at an angle.

The outerside of the star is the side from which the holes are made. The outerside must always face upwards when sewing the star together, so that the holes match. Therefore, the second star must be embroidered on the back. Sew the two stars together with tacking stitches using a 1mm leather cord. Start at the smallest point with 10 cm. Don't forget a cord for hanging and do leave an opening to put the stuffing inside.

Tear the stuffing into small tufts, lightly fill the star and close with tacking stitches.

Tie the two ends together.
