A watercolour painting with watercolours; a technique where the colour is diluted with water, making them transparent on white paper. It's illustrated here with watercolour pencils; the colour is applied dry and then painted over with a brush and water.

1.   Sketch a design on watercolour paper with a pencil, preferably with HB grade as it gives a fine line without smudging.

2.   Important (if the watercolour paper is not from a pad with glued edges): Attach the paper onto the work table with masking tape, preventing the paper from bowing upwards when painting. A tip: protect the table by placing a plastic pocket underneath.

3.   When sketching with a pencil: Paint with colouring pencils. Here we have used Supracolor. Dip the brush in water and brush over the colours until they blend.

4.   When sketching with normal colouring pencils (waterproof); eg:- Pablo: Paint with watercolour pencils. Here we have used Supracolor. Dip the brush in water and brush over the colours until the blend.

5.   A tip: Children can benefit from using thick watercolour pencils, as they are more robust and easier to handle; eg:- Woody from Stabilo and Groove 3in1 from Lyra.
