A woven Picture from Cotton Yarn, Wool and Strips of Fabric
#v14134
This woven hanging decoration is made with wool, cotton yarn and long strips of fabric on a wooden loom. We will now show you how to weave this hanging decoration and how to warp the loom.

How to do it

2. Place the thread with the knot into the groove on the lower block of the loom. Place the loose block approx. in the middle of the loom.

3. Warp the warp threads in the grooves of the transverse blocks at the top and the bottom of the loom. NB: the warp thread only goes into every other groove in the block in the middle.

4. Continue this process until the entire frame is full. NB: thread fewer warp threads if you want a more narrow, woven section.

5. Now pull the thread from the right hand side towards the left and up along the left hand side towards the block in the middle. Now feed the thread forth and back between the empty grooves and the wooden blocks at the top and bottom of the frame.

9. Loosen the wing nuts on each side of the lower block and twist, tightening all the warp threads on the loom. Tighten the wing nuts again. The loom is now ready.

13. Wind wool onto the shuttles. Now start weaving. Feed the shuttle between the two layers of warp threads from one side to the other.

16. Use a comb to firmly push the woven wool in place, so the woven section becomes tight. Here we have used a wooden comb.

17. Tip the block in the middle again (do this every time the shuttle has been fed through the warp threads in one direction).

18. NB: when weaving with carded wool, you may add an exciting structure in the weaving by pulling a bit up in the wool's fibres as shown here.

19. Weaving with strips of fabric: rather than using the shuttle, this long piece of carded wool is fed through the warp threads using a yarn needle.

20. When the woven section is completed, tie all the ends together and secure/hide them as well as possible within the weaving. Trim the ends.

21. Loosen the wing nuts at the wooden block at the top and lift off the warp threads. Repeat this procedure at the bottom.
