A Head with facial Features made from Papier-Mâché on a Balloon

Each of the heads shown are made from a balloon covered with papier-mâché. Facial features, hair etc. are painted on the head using Art School acrylic paint.

Blow up the balloon and attach the balloon holder without the stick.

Cover the balloon with layers of torn pieces of blank newspaper attached with wallpaper paste.

Cut a 20cm piece of the balloon stick and insert it into the holder on the balloon. Now shape the neck by covering the balloon stick with blank newspaper and wallpaper paste. Make sure to achieve a smooth transition between the stick and the balloon. You may let the paper dry between applying layers.

Model facial features and hair onto the balloon with more newspaper and wallpaper paste. Let it dry for one to two days.

Cut a clean milk or juice carton in half. Fill it with casting plaster and stand the balloon head in the carton (i.e. the balloon stick). The actual balloon head will rest on the edge of the carton. NB: shorten the balloon stick beforehand if necessary.
